Is the Duomo area the right base?
For a short trip, yes. Everything a first visit to Milan involves is inside a twenty-five minute walk, and Duomo station puts you one line from Milano Centrale and from both airports' rail and coach terminals. The trade-offs are noise, price and a shortage of ordinary life: the streets immediately around the square empty of residents and fill with shoppers, and dinner within sight of the cathedral costs more and is worse than dinner three streets away. For a longer stay, Brera to the north and Porta Romana to the south give you a neighbourhood and are still ten to fifteen minutes from the square.
