The Milanese dishes to order
Four things are local rather than generically Italian, and they are what to look for on a menu near the Duomo. Risotto alla milanese, yellow with saffron and finished with marrow. Cotoletta alla milanese, a bone-in veal cutlet fried in butter. Ossobuco, the shin braised until it collapses, often served with the risotto. And mondeghili, the fried meatballs that used up yesterday's boiled beef. In winter, cassoeula; in December, panettone, which is a Milanese invention and is sold from every counter in the city from November. A menu near the square with none of these on it is cooking for tourists.
Eating fast and cheap
Two formats do this well. Pizza al trancio, the thick square slice eaten standing, is the Milanese fast lunch and costs a few euros a piece two minutes from the cathedral. Panzerotti, fried filled dough, is the other, and the queue outside the historic place on Via Santa Radegonda is part of the experience. Beyond those, the department store food hall on the square, added in 2007, is a covered set of counters with a terrace facing the facade, and the delicatessen on Via Spadari does a counter lunch of restaurant quality without the sitting. Standing at a bar always costs less than sitting at the same bar; that price difference is legal and posted.
Eating with a view of the Duomo
There are perhaps five places with a real view of the cathedral, and their food ratings are consistently below their view. The terrace bar in the Galleria scores 3.6 across 5,810 reviews and the cocktail terrace at Piazza del Duomo 21 scores 3.3 across 3,505, against 4.8 for the cathedral itself. The better-value versions of the same idea are the top floor of the department store on the square and the cafe on the top floor of the Museo del Novecento, which looks straight at the facade. Treat any of them as a drink with a view, order accordingly, and eat somewhere else.
Aperitivo, and how it works
Between roughly 18:00 and 21:00 Milanese bars serve a drink with food included in the price, which is the city's own invention and the cheapest good evening near the centre. You pay for the drink, usually a Negroni, a spritz or a glass of wine, and the food arrives with it. Around the Duomo the format is everywhere but at tourist prices; ten minutes north into Brera or fifteen south-west to the Navigli gets you the version locals use. One of the partner ticket bundles pairs the cathedral and museum entry with a drink on a terrace facing the piazza, which is a way to have the view without choosing the restaurant.
How to avoid the tourist trap
Five signals, in order of reliability. A menu translated into six languages with photographs. A person outside inviting you in. A location with a direct line of sight to the cathedral facade. No Milanese dishes on the menu. And a cover charge, the coperto, well above the usual two to three euros. The reverse is also true: a short menu, a room full of people speaking Italian at 13:30, and a two-street walk away from the square are the three cheap tests that work.
